The New Democratic Front (NDF) is a newly formed political party in Sri Lanka. An offshoot of the Democratic United National Front and a constituent partner of the United National Front, the party is led by Shalila Moonesinghe. The symbol of the party is a swan. General Sarath Fonseka, a former Chief of Defence Staff and commander of the Sri Lanka Army, is the party's candidate for the 2010 presidential Elections. He is contesting in the elections as the "joint opposition candidate", and is supported by the United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the two principal opposition parties, among others. He is therefore one of the two main candidates for the election, along with current President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
On 2 December 2014, Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena has deposited his bond for the upcoming presidential poll to contest under the symbol of the swan from the New Democratic Front. Mr. Sirisena went on to win the election on 8 January 2015, and was sworn in as the new President of Sri Lanka the following day.
